I got my tax return and decided to go out and buy a fishtank. My roomies will just have to deal with it, and it's in my bedroom anyhow so they can't say much. I've decided I'm going to do a dwarf puffer tank which my boyfriend is helping me set up since he has one, too. Here are the specs so far:

Puffer Habitat

  • Tank - 10g glass aquarium
  • Substrate - Onyx plant sand
  • Filtration - Aquaclear 150
  • Heater - Neptune 50w
  • Lighting - Power Compact for plants (coming soon)
  • Decor - natural rock, plastic plants (temporary)
  • Thermostat - Top Fin liquid crystal digital
  • Cycling currently with 4 tiny rosie feeders

I will be making this into a planted tank eventually, and will plant java ferns first before the puffers are added so they have more hiding places. I hate plastic plants, but puffers don't care. They're temporary anyhow until I decide which plants I want. Here is a picture I snapped of it prior to filter, heater and feeder additions this week:

You do know that puffers require Brackish water, correct? And I'm no expert by any means, but depending on the type of puffer, it might require more than just a 10 gallon tank. I would wait for someone else to chime in though...
 
Like I said, I'm no expert. Some one else with more knowledge will post on the subject. But from what I've read on here, puffers can start out as freshwater, and will need Brackish as they get older, or it will severely shorten their lifespan.
 
Nice plants. I have the exact same ones in my tank. :cool: :p

My little brother LOVES puffers of any shape/form....maybe with a "donation" from my parents, I can set up a tank for him.
 
NGerdes--there are many puffers that are true freshwater fish, and not only don't need any salt, but will die in higher brackish conditions. Dwarves are completely FW fish.

Make sure you have a good, reliable source of snails. It's not as essential with the dwarves--they will thrive with crunchies just once or twice a week, but they will sometimes not take to prepared foods as juveniles. 3-4 will do fine in a 10--you may get lucky enough for them to spawn.

Moving to Brackish--even though the dwarves are not brackish, we try to keep all the puffer threads located in one spot, and that ended up being the brackish forum.

I like the look of onyx sand. Rocks look good too.

My only thing would be that I'd say you should have fishless cycled it so that the fish don't have to go through a cycle...but I'm sure you know that already;)

Do you know how many puffers you'll be getting?

I too really like the Onyx sand. I didn't think I would since I'm such a fan of colour, but I love that dark glittery sand with the purple-grey rocks. Those plastic plants are going to drive me nuts until I decide which natural ones I want to use. Plastic=:sick:

Thanks, Leopardess. :) To be honest, I read about fishless cycling and just didn't get it. Call me dumb, but no matter how much research I did on it I just couldn't understand what they were trying to say to do with adding the right amounts of ammonia. So yes, I went with the feeders because I understood how to do that. lol

I'll probably get 5 puffs. :)
