Hi all, I'm new at this chat thing so bear with me. I have a 90 gal. reef tank now that I am going to replace very soon since the glass is extremely scratched from age & over agressive cleaning, plus there is very hard green algae in the scratches that won't come off. I'm getting another 90 pre-drilled reef ready tank, I want to paint the back, any hints for that? I'm a little nervous about the actual move of livestock [corals, & fish], I have a plan including "renting" trash cans from Home Depot [I work there], any info would be appreciated, thanks. chap

hey as for te painting just make sure its safe for the fish if it gets exposed to the water. as for the move id just leave ur other 90 running in the basics with all the animals and half the rock. when u remove half the rock for the new one also take some of the sand as well to seed the new tank. do a water change of about 30-50% on the tank after the removal. then move the animals over slowly as the new tank finishes its cycle. an alternate is to empty ur tank and hold the animals in one of those trash cans. then move ur sand and rock over to the new one and clean out ur old 90. the run some powerheads in the old tank at about half full and move all the other equipment to the new tank...oh and leave the heater in the old as well. then put ur fish into the old tank with the power heads and heater and move them over after the cycle slowly. i moved my 29 to my 55 not to long ago and i did the entire move in one day and it all worked out great. but with a tank ur size that may not be possible. i hope i helped some and welcome to AC! hope u enjoy it here.

tank swap

Thanks for your suggestions, I did the tank swap on Sat. 2/24 using the "trash can method". I started ai 11am and finished up at 9pm. What a day!! All went well, no losses, I even gained a frag for my 14g nano cube. I painted the back with Behr kitchen & bath paint and it looks great. I'll post some pictures as soon as I figure out how.

Painting tanks is fine as long as you paint over the silicon, it eats into silicon and over time, will break down and a leak will form..I just done my DIY build so have done a lot of research on things like painting the tank...can be in a world of pain if your not carefull...

I painted the outside and did not contact any silicone, so I should be okay. But thanks in advance for all the sleepless nights I'm about to have...lol

help

Been trying to send you a photo of the new tank configuration (for your enjoyment) but I can't remember how. Embarrassing! Can you give me a step by step? I entered what I thought was the URL...apparently not! HELP! THANKS! chap

best way to do it is use the "manage attachment" button when adding a post to thread or creating a new thread..Its on the additional options part of the posting form..

Other way to do it is to setup a photobucket account ( www.photobucket.com ), upload an image there and it creates three lines of internet code below the photo when uploaded. Use the code line and paste it into the thread post...

Hope this helps matey

I guess I'm just thick, but I can't figure out how to post a pic. of my tank. I'm sure enjoying it though. I just got a new frogspawn and a rose brain[?], and I can't take my eyes off them. I am having a little trouble getting my skimmer dialed in though, but I'll figure it out.
