what is the best method to clean the tank

and should i just ditch the gravel that came with it?

or could i boil that ?

the lady that i got it from , one of my daughters doctors, had a bunch of decorations in it, i assuem i will want to boil those as well..

i am hopefully getting a new top from another member of the forums here since she didnt have the filter with hers, she has had the tank down for awhile.

any suggestions for it ? fish or otherwise?

*Annoucement--yet another unpaid endorsement for oxyclean. :)

I'd fill the tank with hot water and add 3 cups of oxyclean, let it sit for 20-30 minutes, scrub at any spots, drain, rinse, and dry. Put all the 'stuff' you want to re-use in there as well, and it should be good to go--except the substrate. JMO, but I prefer to use new gravel that I can rinse to remove dust. The problem with used substrate is that a) you don't know if it's coated or not, and b) it can be challenging to completely remove any build up organics, and bleaching or similar treatments can be difficult to rinse completely clear from the substrate.

Do you mean this stuff? Does it work well?

Peace...

Yep, that's the stuff. It cleans really well, breaks down organics, and rinses clean with much less effort that harsher chemicals like bleach.
