Hello All,
Im new here. Just to introduce my self my name is Joe and I am a senior at UCLA. I just set up my ten gallon tank and decided to grow plants in my aquarium. I went to petsmart to buy a few plants and followed this article for setting up my gravel and substrate "http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/kelly-intro.html" .On top of the substrate I put regular aquarium gravel. I put a bit more vermiculite then soil, but I compensated but putting in flourishtabs by seachem near the roots. I have 6 plants all together in the aquarium and I could put a lot more in. I dont know exactly what the plants are called but I do know that they are under the hard to kill section of aquabotanic.com. The leaves have turned brown in some areas and it looks as if they are going to fall apart if they continue to change color. The water is fine according to all my tests. I have a bio wheel mini circulating the water. I also added some flourish tabs by seachem to the soil to help feed the plants. What am I doing wrong? What do I need to do differently? I thank you for all the help you guys and girls are going to be to me!

I don't like in-substrate tabs to begin with, and they are particularly troublesome when used in a newly set up tank where plant are being changed and/or moved around. When they are disturbed they get into the water table and can cause serious green water/algae issues. I suggest you make every effort not to disturb them until they spend themselves. This can take 2 - 3 months.
We could use more information in addition to the lighting request above. As many water parameters as possible.

are you dosing co2 at the moment? if you are, the bio wheel could be causing problems as it agitates the surface causing the co2 to expell from the tank. just a thought.

30 watts of light sounds like it would be enough, assuming you're right that the plants are easy types. You haven't really given alot of info and I'm not sure what to tell you.

Do you have fish? Adding any liquid fertilizers? It could be a nutrient issue

You won't be getting much fertilizer with such a low bioload. I believe liquid fertilizers should be at most pet stores. You might need macro nutrients (N,P,K) and as far as I know there aren't many types available that have those.

You may have to be careful with adding copper (in trace nutrient fertilizers usually), I'm not sure how sensitive ADFs are. Here's a very good article on them though:
