newbie question

Food that is alive :thud:  :hang: :duh: :duh:

but seem like most of the LFS only carry flake and frozen food

...Have you ever seen feeder guppys? or feeder ghost shrimp, or feeder goldfish???
Thats considered live food.

'Live' food covers a huge variety of items. The obvious, like guppies, goldies, and shrimp are found at many stores--though often they are not in the main part of the busines, but rather a separate tank in the back where you can't seem them.

Less common live options include: mosquito larvae, blood and black worms, rotifers, scuds, green water solutions, snails, vinegar eels, insects, insect larvae (maggots), micro worms, and brine shrimp. Most can be raised at home, but are not found at many fish stores--simply because they are a typically tough to make a profit on. Check Aqua-bid, and you'll see many live food cultures that you can purchase. However--keep in mind that while live food is needed for some species, or for certain stages of some species, it is not needed for all fish. Most fish will be just fine with a balanced flake food.

Vegetables are another feeding option.

can anybody tell me what is live food?

There's your sign....

(anyone know the comedian I'm talking about? He's one of those redneck comedians - I don't know his name, but that's his response to questions like that) :o

Okay--any more rude comments about the question and I will be forced to be rude to YOU. This is an honest question, and one warrants a polite answer. It's sort of like 'live rock' in the saltie world--and being snippy about the question is not friendly, and against TOS. Clear?

I've had trouble finding live foods too. Back in the day petco carried live brine shrimp but not anymore. Not eough hobbyists are knowledgable about he benefits of live food or thast it even exists as an option. You can buy live food online and cultures to raise your own. I do something that everyone yells at me for, I leave out a dish of water in the summer and feed the resulting mosquito larvae to my fish. I also get blood worms (midge larvae) in there too. If u have time, raising brine shrimo and worms is easy.
