Newbie with question, about tank size. I do apartment maintenance, an people will leave behind all sorts of stuff. An i been wanting an aquarium for awhile. But the formula i have to calculate total water volume is for pools an in foot measurements, I believe that it's a 30 gallon tank, done by arm length at the local pet shop. Considering the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule, i would like to make sure i'm ok. It's a hexagonal tank, 20.5 " deep , length 18.5" (done by adding two glass panels length) widith 9.25",have problems with some fish loss. I will come back in a few to tell the rest of the story(just got home). Not the greatest typer, but trys,so please exucuse my spelling, BBL Thanx

To calculate volume in gallons, the formula is LxWxH, divided by 231. Please do not use the 1 inch per gallon rule, or any other "rule" for stocking your tanks. Thier are people here who have had 20+years of expierence who can offer much better judgement of wether or not your tank is/will be overstocked than any "rule of thumb".

And oh yes, welcome to AC! :hi: .

Yes as i have just read in here an thanx for the formula brb

I am coming up with about 19.73 gallons. With hexes, the LxWxH doesn't work straight up--it requires a special formula. You have to calculate the area of the hex first. The shortcut for the area of a hexagon is 2.59808 x a x a, where a = length of one side of the hexagon. Then multiply by the height (or depth). To get gallons, divide by 231, the number of cubic inches in a gallon.

So, in your case:

2.59808 x 9.25 x 9.25 x 20.5 / 231 = 19.73 gallons.

This completes todays Math Minute. Thanks for tuning in! :read:
