nitrite poisoning?

i have 8 zebra danios in my 40 gal. and one of them is flashing around, scraping on rocks, gasping for air and has brownish/red colored lungs, and on his underside. i think it could b nitrite poisoning but none of my other fish are like this. any ideas?

have u put any other fish recently ? or used rock? a new filter?

nitrite and ammonia are both 0 i did cycle the tank with the danios but only one showing these symptoms. Other fish are: 6 black skirt tetras, 1 Black molly and i just added a rope-fish today.

was this tank used b4 or did it house any other fish or is it brand spankin new? cus sumtimes other fish can leave desease ,,,,other than that get an extra sponge filter,,or some zeolite if u can

Wow, why would you suspect nitrite poisoning if none were present? Also, I'd skip the advice about the sponge filter, heh, not likely to do much. Any sign of gill flukes or parasites visible? Also, what were your other test readings that Kasakato asked for.

ph is 7.2 and nitrates are 10ppm everything seems fine in the water and its friggin crystal clear. the only reason i suspected possible nitrite poisoning is that i've heard of people using danios for cycling and then returning them, plus his gills are brownish. no sign of flukes or parasites. but he does seem to be breathing heavily.

Find the cause then do a big water change. Do a 50% water change then test it after its had time to mix. If the tank is newly set up, did you do a fishless cycle? If so you may have used too much amonia, which would cause nitrite levels to be too high. If so, do 50% water changes every day until the levels come down. Also check the water temperature. It may be too high.
