has anyone ever used live bacteria for cycling? well duh...what I mean has anyone added them manualy rather than letting them grow by adding an old rock or substrate. if so, where did you get them from and how did it turn out?

Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter were once thought to be the principal nitrifying bacteria in freshwater aquaria. However, more recently it has been suggested that Nitrospira and Nitrosospira spp. actually make up the bulk of the nitrifying biofilm.

Nitrospira and Nitrosospira bacteria are available for sale as a live culture, in a product called "Bio Spira". I've never used it myself, but there have been quite a few positive reviews for it on this very forum.

I've used Bio-Spira several times and recommend it. There is a danger in relying on it, the bacterias are delicate and may die off during transport if not refridgerated properly. So you would still need to pay attention to your water parameters for a few days.
