I think it is just another symptom of the failure of government. It is not just the US or Canada, it is everywhere.
There is no accountability anymore, government has become too large to police it's own activities, as is evident by increases in corruption and criminal behavior everywhere. The chances of being caught for bad behavior or incompetence (if you are a government employee) is minimal.
Our president is a rehabilitated drunk (also a rumored cocaine abuser in his youth), liar, mass murderer (I'm not talking about terrorists, I'm talking about Iraqi civilians), tyrant, sneak, and an incompetent fool (some would argue he is innocent of malice due to his monumental stupidity and gullibilty, but I don't buy that).
Our vice president is a liar and a war profiteer, who encouraged no bid
contracts for a company (Halliburton) he used to work for. That company defrauded the US government out of MILLIONS of dollars so far.
Our police victimize the people they are sworn to protect (see New Orleans, and everywhere else, I've been a victim myself of police misconduct).
Our judicial systems are failing.
Nepotism and cronyism are rampant.
The UN is run by Kofi Annan whose own son defrauded the organization for millions in the oil for food program.
The environment is being destroyed, and our ecosystems are failing. They are drilling for oil in the ANWR even as they say they are trying to end dependence on fossil fuels. Coral reefs that supply much of our oxygen are bleaching and dying off due to global warming and pollution. Deforestation continues unabated for the most part. We lose biodiversity and are seeing extinctions on a daily basis. Yet still we refused the Kyoto accord, which is at best a band-aid on a bullet wound.
Where is the outrage? Why the complacency? Why the selfishness?
Someone said to me recently in this forum: "things are not as bad as you think." No, things are probably even worse than I think.
But it all begins with accountability. It begins with YOU, not venting here on a forum, but you making a difference. It begins with starting a revolution locally, changing the hearts and minds of those around you and demanding things change for the better.
Or you can just go watch LOST and SURVIVOR and eat a bag of chips. You'll read or see the bad news and say "ain't it a shame" instead of shaming those responsible.
Well shame on you too.
