I just started a new saltwater aquarium. It has been running for about 48 hours and everything had been set to the perfect levels. I woke up this morning to find out that my Millenium 3000 filter had taken all of the salt out of my aquarium and trapped it behind its catridge. What can I do to correct this problem?

Did you just add the salt into the water with the filter running? Pre-mixing the salt with water before adding it to the tank is a must. To fix your problem now, just remove the filter and dump the salt into a bucket and take some tank water and add that to the bucket and stir it up till the salt dissolves then dump it back into the tank.

Ohhh and welcome!!!!

Thanks, I mixed it up before I put it in but I guess it wasn't enough. The hydrometer reading is better now. :dance

I was a lil confused at your post, once salt dissolves in the tank, it *never* comes out-- to my knowledge there is no way a sw tank can lose salinity other than by very, very slow salt creep and the occasional physical removal of water (test kits, acclimation drips, etc....) and topping off with freshwater.

I'm betting you use a swing-needle type hydrometer (I do too). Be CAREFUL with these, they are very, very easy to get a very very bad reading. Make sure you fill it up VERY slowly so you don't form bubbles on the needle. If you have any, it WILL give a higher-than-reality reading. My guess is this is what happened. Try buying a big rubbermaid trash can (20 gallons or so) to premix and age your water in. Water mixed and aged a couple of days is quite superior to freshly mixed saltwater.

Thanks for the advice. :o
