Hey Everyone,

I am new to saltwater tanks and enjoy keeping live coral than fish really. I been in the water pond bis though for a number of years and recently finished my new website. I am still looking though this wonderful site, but half photos of my coral that i will post, sometime soon. I have noticed recently a worm like creature that only sits out of is small tube, just enough to cast a long line in the current. Then reels it back in after a few minutes. This worm like creature also puts out what looks like four short horn/tentecals. The color of this worm is orangish/brown. I wonder if it is a worm or somethin else, any ideas?
thanks ahead for any ideas.

photos of reef and wierd worm

Thanks for the info guys,

I manage the best photo i can get without a tripod or better lens. The Tank has more grass than i would like, and these tall thin white tubes, worms? These white tubes have alge right on the tips and nothing has ever come out of them, but they definitly have grown since i put the tank together. The photos of the worm have the it centered in each one the best i could. IT has a white case, and only sticks up about 5mm out of it so far. You can see the arms/horns in one photo pretty good, but these are still not the long line it puts out. Like a fisherman cast into the current, then reels it back in. I couldnt get that line to photograph. any insight or help would be greatly appricated. as well if anyone knows any good websites or books on reef tanks. I did check out that page and i didnt see any thing except two photos at the top that seem to act the same, with the line. thanks again

Could be one of several possibilities. Vermetid snails make a tube, and send strands of mucus out to catch food (see this link) . Certain ctenophores send out very long tentacles, with side branches (here's a photo from Ron Shimek's web site):

.
Finally, terebellid, or spaghetti worms also have long tentacles, but these move along the surface, not in the water column, and each animal has multiple tentacles.

Vermetid Gastropod

mogurnda,

I do believe what i ahve to be the Vermetid Gastropod. THe tube is not as long as the ones in those photos. BUt it does wrap around a bit of a distance to the host rock. The photos with the many strands out looks similar as well. Except this you is mcuh younger with only one long string. IT tentecals look short, more like horns similar to the other photo. ITs very happy thanks for the info. I attached my photos in my last post, but they didnt seem to work.
