came home again today and found one of my ghost shrimp upside down just laying at the bottom of my tank. The first one i found dead was being eaten, the second i found all ripped up in filtration, and now this! and another shrimp is still being inactive and abnormally white colored. the ammonia levels are next to zero, and im out of nitrate testers. im about to change the water which i do at least once a week, but it doesnt help...
I dont know what to do :(

check the PH as thats more than likely whats hurting them.
also check the differences in your PH outta the tap vs when its stabalized for 24 hours. it might change quite a bit...

are these ghost, amano, yellow, grass or what kinda shrimp?

Ive given up trying to raise Ghosts for my puffers, im just gonna stick with raising snails. I cant get the ghosts to live long enough in their breeding tank to reproduce, and the puffers eat them faster than i can buy them. Ghosts are a pain and its hard to have good luck with them unless your tank is fully cycled (and doesnt have preditors in it)

I agree...luckily they are a dozen for a 1$ where I shop....nearly the same price as feeders

okay then, I wont buy any more of these guys, but if these ghosts all died, would it be wise to suggest a disease or parasite killed them off or the water? My betta would probably do much better back in this 5.5gal then in his 1 gal, and i want to give him more space and heat. But i wouldnt want to add him in if theres something lurking in the water waiting for something else to kill...
the only thing in there suspicious looking would still be some white fungus growing on the gravel. it seems to have stopped though but what harm would this do to my betta...?

*edit*iodine or calcium...how could i find out if they dont have enough? but also my shrimp when i first brought them home started to moult, but only a week later i found one of them dead, not a few days (which is the time it takes for them to grow their new shell...isnt it?*edit*

they dont molt till the new carpace is developed I thought?
at any rate, I've been told a few times that immediately after they molt they are most sensitive to water conditions, in particular PH changes

I wouldnt worry about iodine or calcium with ghost shrimp....its just not worth it. If you want some long time shrimp try amano or butterfly/bamboo shrimp. They both do a good job of removing algae. Ghost shrimp are increadibly sensitive, and if the conditions arent good then they will most likely die. They never last longer than a few days in my puffer tank (either they die, or they're eaten), and the breeder tank isnt much better.

i read up they were hearty and good cleaner/scavengers. ill go with your advise and get amano or bamboo shrimp, (whichever one i can find or looks neater :)) or if these two guys survive ill keep them in.
i was also thinking of guppies. i remember my first tank we had a heaping mass of plants floating and i found plenty of guppy fry hiding in there. my betta might attack them though so ill have to test it out.
but what about the whitish fuzz on the gravel? i don't want to put any more creatures in there with that creepy looking stuff, and i've tried so much but i cant get rid of it...
