North American Freshwater

No harm in raising local species in a tank, I never said to mix it with foreign. I never said that. My point is exactly what it was. Also I see no harm if you did raise a local fish and released it where you found it, I dont see why I should go to jail or pay a fine, sorry, I just dont see it. It's bogus. That's my opinion on the matter, no need for attack and bullying. Also, i take back my protest, just vote for change!

Then convince others to go along with the rules--that's the only way to prevent more stringent regulations. The problems that arise from non-native introductions increase all the restrictions, not just those regarding the exotics. The point is that you should follow the local regulations on the matter, even if you don't agree. Kind of like speed limits--you might think it's okay to drive 80, but if it's posted at 65, you're still in trouble.

If a fisheries officer catches you trying to return a fish to a lake or stream he or she will have no idea where it was originally caught from and how it was origianlly raised. They won't want to listen to a story you have no way of proving. Yes, game fish and other local species are very interesting fish, but the law is the law. If you wish to change it then go for it and good luck. Write letters, get elected or elect the people with the same ideas as you, but breaking the law in protest will most likely lead to a huge fine or worse time in jail.

Yes, North America can be considered a free place with freedom of speech, but not when you are trying to tell another that breaking the law is okay. Heck I was stopped for trying to collect mosquito larvae from a National park to feed my fish. Do I think that is stupid, yup. But have I done it again, nope cause I don't want to end up in trouble over some larvae.

In North Carolina it is not illegal to release a fish back where you caught it.

Maybe somewhere else it is but if I catch a longear sunfish out of Lake A the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission cannot arrest me as of right now under current law for putting that sunfish back into Lake A.

I see what you are saying in regards to parasites but there are a lot more parasites in a lake than in a well maintained aquarium.

Nobody is dumb enough to stock a sick fish I hope.

Well rules are there as the dumb people do exist. Many laws are made for the lowest common denomenator.

I totally agree... this is how we get diseases like Largemouth Bass Virus. Simply put, catching a fish from a local water body, raising it with other fish in an aquarium, and putting it back in that local water body is STUPID and IGNORANT... I am going into Wildlife and Fisheries Management, and I've heard horror stories... why would you put a whole fishery at risk to have a fish in an aquarium for a few years?
Frankly, if South Carolina doesn't have regs against it, I would be surprised... and appaulled... its irresponsible. I too want a native tank in the future... but you can bet I'm getting the permits for it before doing it.

honestly bass are the most territorial fish i have ever seen. they would beat up any oscar or african cichlid......a couple brook trout in a cold 300 gallon tank would be awsome provided you have lots of water circulation and very clean water. check with laws but if you can buy it you can usually keep it in an aquaium if you have a permit

well, belive me, i dont plan on keeping any smallies with any chicilids, although i might throw in a small piranha just to prove a point to my freind (jks, i know what would happen, and wouldnt kill a fish like a piranha just to prove a point) but aside from that, i htink im gonna do a "costal" brookie thing, if you know what that mean, thats if i can get the permits, which shouldnt be to hard for me.

The most irresponsible thing is to put tropical fish in native waters.

Like those huge pacu in the link above.

Somebody buys a pacu or tambaqui and they get too big for that persons 100 gallon.

So off they dump them in the local hot hole at the power plant lake.

Keeping native and tropical fish together is stupid anyway and I don't do that.

I keep natives with natives.
