'nother question... mold in tank?

I came home from a 2.5 week vacation to find mold in my tank. White and fuzzy, located above the water on the plastic bar that goes down the middle of the tank, width-wise. The tank lid is solid, with one hole in the back (where the filter or heater cord would go out). And then there's a medium sized lid I open to feed Vitara.

Should I be concerned about the mold? Is there anything I can do to prevent that?

Pretty unlikely that it is actually mold if there is circulation and a living fish in there. I'm no expert on white fuzzy growths in the fish tank (Or anwhere else for that matter) but have had a few odd fungi grow in my tank that usually clear themselves up quickly, I'd take a picture if you can and post it. then remove all of it you can with your vaccum. and see if it comes back.

Are you sure it just isn't carbonate crystals forming. They often can look fuzzy. I have never seen white mold though and I have seen lots of it.

Dave, I removed it as soon as I saw it, so no picture. Sorry!

TK- I hadn't heard of those, so that's very well what it could've been. Are those a concern? Do I need to do anything?

Thanks!

If it is just carbonate crystals forming then it isn't a concern. They would come from the water and would easily dissolve back into it. This would probably be true if you have hard water.

But either way I would remove it and watch for its return.

I have seen the same thing as Spartan. Flake food that landed on the ledge of the lid, rather than the water, tends to grow white and fuzzy mold pretty quickly. Wipe down the inside of the lid every other day or so and you shouldn't have any problems.

I don't feed flake food, does that make a difference? I feed betta pellets.

It's likely my pet sitter may of gotten some food on the divider thingie, but I know I don't (I always feed in the same spot), so that shouldn't happen again. We'll see!

Thanks for all the help! Much appreciated :)

Pellet food will do the same thing. I have the same problem at work--the lid of my 5 will be damp, and if I don't notice the bit of food, within 2 days it's a white fuzzy lump. Not a big deal, I just wipe it off. Doubtful that it would cause a problem if it fell in, but I prefer to be safe than test that!

Most likely mold in my opion as well. I've had it crop up afew times where food might fall. Any type of food you feed your fish has enough nutrients in it to grow mold. It's kind of like a petri (sp?) dish in a fish tank. It's humid and warm add a base for mold to grow on (i.e. food) and it will grow. Just wipe it off or rinse it off if you can and you should be good to go.
