oceanic biocube question

Im thinking of buying the 14g oceanic biocube system to start a reef. just wondering if the stock lighting (24w 10,000k and 24w actinic) is good enough to grow sps corals and clams. if anyone has this system please share your experience. thanks.

No way on the sps and clams. You can get away with soft corals but that is it. I will spare you a book written reply.:silly:

But if you have more questions do ask...

Also if you could google or get a book about marine water chemistry for salt water tanks. That is a good foundation for your education before diving into the hobby.

You could probably also do LPS in there.

I think it would be difficult. The power compacts are just not enough in my opinion. Hammers, Gonapora, Frogspawns just wont hack it. There may be other LPS out there that could but it depends on lighting requirement for that species.

Like some monti's can survive under that lighting..Survive is the word..but grow well is another story.

Experiences with biocube but 29 gallon showed I could not maintain Gonapora and Hammers even at the highest point of the tank and 10k bulbs vs 1ok and actinic. It just was not enough.

Maintaining the higher quality pramaters is another issue to. Sure you can change water 50% weekly but I think it would be a challenge.

As expensive as LPS are...its too much of a gamble unless the poster can consider upgrading the lighting.

For the 14 gallon I don't know... I do know that at nano reef keeping sites...they have lots of info about modificationis and such.

When I did research on the 29gallon there were 2 skimmers at the time that fit in the middle chamber. CPR Bak Pak was one of them.

I wish I could help but I don't know for that specific sized Oceanic Cube. The lighting there are several lights I saw and Sunpod makes a good light that can sit over that 14gallon.

A store not so local from me has a 150w MH over it..way over it due to heat =)

I'm sure it varies but Sev has a rockin Frogspawn in a Biocube 8 which has similar light. Also, my Caulastrea is growing several new heads under similar lighting.
