I have two ocellated skinks and I what to know if there is any way I can make them less skitish around me. I have had them for a while and am currently trying to recreate their natural habitat of north Africa to see if that helps. Any sugestions or comments are welcome.

PS: I will see if I can get some pictures.

That is neat. I do not know much about reptiles but I have hermit crabs (land-based) and they were extremely skittish at first. Over time they have gotten much better, so perhaps your skinks will do the same.

One of them isn't bad but the other is the one I am working on. If I can figure out how to get the pictures off my camera and on to the computer I can post some shots of her.

This is of their tank (top view) You can sort of see their dens over on the right side.

This big girl is about 8 inches long and she will sometimes let me hold her unlike the other.

Really?!?! This is why I don't spen a ton of money on a nice camera because I can't share the pictures!

I guess I can't see it. It is because my browser filters it off because it senses "bad content" lol. :) Come to think of it, one of my hermits is extremely shy and won't come out at all unless the otheris out.

Just like with pretty much any reptile, you have to get it to gain your trust. You're going to have to keep in mind that they view you as a predator and reacting the way they do is what keeps them alive in the wild. I'm also pretty sure they're wild caught since no one really breeds them in captivity.

For starters, I'd move the tank up to a higher level if you can. Eye level with the skinks would be best. This way you don't appear as a large predator hovering over them. Let them get use to you while you work around in their enclosure without bothering or touching them. After a few days you can attempt to shoe them onto your hand for brief periods in the tank. If you can avoid grabbing them and let them walk onto your hand. After a while of repeating this they will learn that you are nothing to fear and hopfully they will tolerate you holding them for a time. Don't stress them out too much either. A few minutes a day is fine. Most skink species excluding BTS are nervous, shy animals.

I agree with Vicious_Fish. Most of my experience with ocellated skinks has involved them diving under the sand. Even the two babies born at the store were very skittish. Stick around to watch them eat, then they will associate you with food. That's how I got my fire skink to come out. Generally I don't handle smaller lizards unless I'm moving them because it's very easy to stress them.
