I just started fishless cycle about a week and a half ago. I added ammonia (a bit too much at first) and adjusted the level to about 4 ppm doing a water change. It has stayed at 4 ppm the entire time and 0 nitrites as well (checked daily) Today I thought just for the hell of it I would check for nitrates and boom, it reads 5 ppm? So after a week and a half, my readings are:
pH 7.2
ammonia: 4 ppm
nitrites 0 ppm
nitrates 5 ppm
What am I doing wrong? I used Prime when I first filled the tank since I have tao water, I have new (not used) fake plants and gravel, and a new eheim cannister filter. I don't get why I have nitrates in the tank already, yet ammonia levels have not changed and no nitrites. Any advice? Thanks
