Hi all

I've been obsessed with this forum since I discovered it in a panic back in January. I've learnt such a lot just from reading about other people's problems!

One thing that does make me curious is the number of people on the site with 'desktop' tanks. Is this common practise in US offices? I can't think that would ever happen here in the UK (I know that I for one would never get any work done if I had livestock on my desk). And the only places you normally see aquaria set up are in restaurants (I don't mean the ones where you pick out your own lobster LOL) and waiting rooms (doctors, dentists etc.).

Just curious.

Sorry if this isn't the forum for it, but none of the others seemed suitable either.

it depends heavily on where you work. some companies encourage people to personalize their offices as much as they want, including a small fish tank. others frown on it. it probably also depends on how high up the corporate ladder you are ;)

It depends on where you work. Our managers ahve been trying to kill goldfish and bettas for years...in small unheated bowls on their desks. I had never seen truley stunted fish until then. Attempts to educate them have only been partially successful.
On the other hand..my nice little 5 gallon eclipse tank...heated of course...with a betta and a few neons is much admired. :) I have a big desk...

Wow, that sounds great. But like I said, I would never do any work! And I guess you have to be careful that other people don't try and be helpful and give the fish 'toys' like paperclips and suchlike.

We're lucky if we're allowed our own plants, IME. But yes, it does depend on the company. Anywhere that won't let you have your own plants usually has a company that comes in and provides displays which are suitable to the light levels.

I used that have a little tank on my desk. I just found that doing waterchanges and maintanance in a work environment is a little bit more tricky than at home and have stopped with the office tank.

To me, it seems to be dependent on the food chain. If you are some big shot managing director with your own office, then having a small fish tank is perfectly acceptable. But if you just have your own cube, then you will stick out like a sore thumb as the only guy on the floor with a fish bowl. I dont think you will get fired over it though..

i work in a financial firm around nyc, and unfortunately you can forget about owning any kind of fish lol, they barely have enough space for PEOPLE. Even md and svp are packed 2-3 into 1 office lol.

I think it would be. And if it wasn't ... then what's the point?

I was just curious - lots of people have mentioned having desk top tanks. The idea had never occurred to me before. I just wondered if it was something that was encouraged because you all spend so much time in the office :read:

I think its great if you are allowed to have a tank at work, and have the room for it too.

I love this site. People answer the silliest questions :)
