okay guys, need your help

How about buying some Green X, or other such phosphate remover. Supposed to help reduce algae by absorbing phosphates & nitrates. You can put it in your filter, or just place it in the tank.

I thought about that, but the water is not green, it is just a cloudy mess.

I just smelled the tank and it smells peppery...if a tank can smell like that. What could it be???

One thing I've learned from this site, and I can't believe it hasn't been asked,is to get the parameters from your tap water. The problem could all stem from that making your water changes worthless until you can correct it.

I would have thought that too, if I didnt have 5 other tanks that get the same water as well, and have never had a problem with what I am having with this tank. Here is a list of things that are in this particular tank

2 Gold Gouramis
Slate
Java Fern
Gravel

That is all. The plants are fine. Growing well. I dont understand, because all my parameters in the tank are fine (posted earlier). This is also a well established tank. I dont do any crazy water changes (except now) about 30% every three or four days. The fish look great. No sign of stress at all. I cant stand the fact that I cannot figure out why the tank is so cloudy....

Normally I am avidly against chemicals but try Accu-Clear. It is basicly a clumping agent that will bind whatever is clouding your water together allowing the filter to take it out of the water. Just make sure you airate the tank very well when you treat the water as it does use oxygen in the binding process.
