I was just wondering what everyone thought about the updated Penguin filters. A co-worker of mine bought a new Penguin 200 on his 29g tank and it seems to be keeping it crystal clear. Although he's not really taxing it too badly with 6 Danios, 2 dwarf gourami and a couple ramshorn snails...

The bio-wheels appear to be larger, and the cover comes down over the wheel more, reducing the noise a bit. I think the sluice is also longer, so that it's closer to the water's surface to reduce splashing.

They obviously have higher flow rates now, and the larger ones have a slot for an extra media clamshell after the cartridge.

I don't have a basis for comparison though. I've only seen a Whisper in action for any extended period of time. I'm thinking about getting one of the new Penguins eventually for a 29g. For the price, they definitely seem to be more comparable to the Emperors than they used to be.

The extra media slot is a huge bonus in my mind. I have two Pengion 125s and a Penguin 170 and I love them. If i ever buy another small to medium tank, I'll think of one, or whenever I have to replace any of these, of course, I'll look into the newer models.

I just picked up a new Penquin 350. Upon first inspection I was pleased with the feel of the parts (as far as construction quality). I dislike the cartidges for it, but it was very easy to replace them with foam slabs.

I've got it up and running now, and I am impressed with the noise suppression ability of the new cover design, especially considering all of the splashing of the biowheels. Right now it's running with an Aqua Clear 500 on my 55g tank, and the noise level of the two filters is certainly comparable, the Penguin being just a bit louder w/ the trickling of water.

I would probably buy another one of these filters, especially at the $27 that I paid for this one.

What kind/size foam do you use to replace the cartridges? Did you just fill up all the "slots" with foam?

I was impressed with how quiet the new Penguin cover design was too. It's nice to know they're perhaps listening to their customers...

Iv thought about doing this. How do you cut the foam? Its hard to cut so I wounldnt be sure id end up fitting well.
