well i was away for a few days. and when i come home theres this little plastic container sitting on the counter. looks like a bug jar. than my mom says. "we got you a turtle!":duh: keep in mind i know nothing about this species (brazilian turtle? looks like a RES to me though) and im not really likeing the idea of cleaning up after him cuz ive read they are messy. i dont have a tank to put him in so i fixed him a 4 gallon tupperware container with a tall rock and a small filter hooked up. hes a lil bigger than a quarter. i dont have any food for him besides shrimp pellets for fish. i dont have the money to buy a tank and i know my parents dont like the idea of getting another tank (just what did they think he was gonna live in???) idk what to do with him bcuz really i dont want a turtle and its gonna live forever. i feel bad pushing away a thoughtful (yet thoughtless on the turtles behalf) gift seeing as how i love animals. there isnt a petstore i can take it too cuz ours just shut its doors. my only option is a friend who loves turtles. he has a 20g L with 2 baby RES and one of these "brazilian turtles". i think thats kinda overstocked to throw my turtle in as well. idk what to do.

I'd give it away in this forum. Post a Classifieds thread if you cannot accommodate the turtle properly. If I were you, I would have a word with your mom first and tell her why you plan to give him away. If I were in this situation, as much as I would love to keep the gift, I would rather give it to another person who can keep it properly than to cramp it in small quarters.:(

yeah. however shipping isnt an option for me and ive never shiped so im affraid hed die in the mail. is he fine with my friend?

In short, no. Is you friend going to be able to afford to have 75g of space EACH for four turtles in a year or two? Besides, they can be very aggressive towards each other, especially RES.

EDIT: If you do not have the money for a tank, then you are actually on the right track with the container. Just get a BIGGER one! I just saw at a local store today 30g rubbermaid containers for $10. They come in 50g sizes too, which can work for a single turtle with the right filtration.

I just researched "Brazilian turtle" and got Hydromedusa maximiliani which is a snake neck turtle that looks nothing like an RES. Can you post photos? I can most likely ID it, and get you on the right track as to care.

Make him a small pond in your backyard!
Or a smaller pond by way of the Rubbermaid containers

This person says they only have a 50 gallon, it looks really big though, and it would work outside for the turtle. Or inside. Either one.

Ugh....pets are the worst surprise gifts.

It looks like a RES? Perhaps it's a Nicaraguan Slider which is basically a RES subspecies.
