I have had stuff like that in just about all the new gravel set ups I've made. Usually they are terrestrial plants and don't survive beyond a week or two.

But I usually let them grow to try to figure out what they are

Ditto. They usually die pretty quickly.

did this plant survive to get secondary leaves? ever figure out what it was?
