Online - how long/met in RL?

I've been online for about 7 years I believe, and I've met 3 people in person. With any luck, that'll be 4 in about a week. Haven't met any deranged stalkers yet, but I'm still young!

I was actually a bit concerned about that--I first spent time on line in chat rooms, and met someone who was...needy. Very needy. He had my real name, and got my address and phone number--started calling, sending me letters, trying to get me to meet him, etc. It was really freaky. I left the chat room completely, and spent 6 months returning his mail and not answering his calls before he finally left me alone.

I've been reluctant since then to share much online--not until I am comfortable that the person on the other end is stable.

It can be scary to find out just how much personal information is available on the Internet. It's trivial to find my full name and home address if you know where to look, but luckily for me A) most people who know how to dig up that kind of info on the 'net are guys and B) I don't appeal to most guys. There are still enough freaks out there that I need to be careful, but I certainly don't envy women who spend any significant amount of time on the Internet.

Caution is the key.

I talk to a lot of people on the phone that I've met online but they only know my cell phone number. While you can get some info from that, you can't get my home address and that number can be changed and not traced. The cell companys will change it for free if you tell them you're being harrassed (not stalked).

Be careful with personal info and don't meet anyone in a private place. Always meet in a public place that is preferable not in your home town. Take the time to drive 30 minutes to meet the person.

And always give your last name as Smith.
I can say that, I grew up a Smith. LOL

There's something handsome about every man, don't you think? (axe murders excluded of course. LOL)

That's a wonderful point of view. For the most part you are right, although I can think of a few more I'd like to exclude who aren't axe murderers.....

Edit: oh... I've been around on the net for almost 15 years, but only involved with message boards/forums on and off for maybe the last 4 or 5. Never met anyone IRL. There have been a couple I wanted to meet, but just never got around to it.

hee hee. I know what you mean. But my philosophy is to always look for the goodness and beauty in people. It helps to deal with the imperfections in life. And, no I'm not naive. I just love life and live it to the fullest I can each day. I have some serious health issues so I refuse to live in the negative. Life's WAY too short for that nonsense! :)

I've been online since about 1992 and I've met one person from this "world". That's my fiance. We met on good old AOL 2.0 =) I tell her she's the best thing I ever downloaded..
