open bottom aquarium

Easier way to remove air? Use a small bit of tubing that has some styrofoam threaded on the end. As you suck out the air using the tube, replace the water in the bottom portion of the tank. Very easy.

"art" is a very loose term that can include anything creative. i like the look of bottom less tanks and consider them art.

Very interesting, I would definitely be fascinated if I were looking at one of these in an airport or waiting room. Do I want one at home? I don't think so...but they are more like art pieces, and really beautiful in their own way. I just find a riparium or a heavily planted tank to be much more what I want for myself. Much more natural, and I think the fish feel more comfortable in them too.

However, a build thread on one of these would be sweet! Let's have it, Vampire Lord :D

I built one of these as an experiment last year. Use a Tom Aqualifter air/water pump. I inverted one aquarium and ran a piece of rigid airline from the bottom to the top. Connect some flexible airline to the rigid tubing and to the inlet side of the Aqualifter pump. Set the inverted aquarium on some blocks in another larger aquarium (the larger aquarium needs to have a volume large enough to handle both tanks). The Aqualifter pump will suck the air out of the inverted aquarium and it will fill with water. It will maintain the water level inside the inverted aquarium too.

I took it down after a little while. It was a pain to clean and fish rarely swam up into it. But it did look cool.
