I currently keep 3 tanks with all mbuna-african cichlids(55g., 29g., and 10g. grow out/hospital) I recently purchased 125 g. and am waiting to set up.
I came across a boatload of medium/large Jack Dempsey's that were being given away so I took a few home. Is it possible to keep 2 of these awesome American cichlids in a 125g. tank mixed with approx. 20 mbuna?? Anyone ever mixed like this before and was it successful??

I like the idea of being able to keep several mbuna in one tank but I am also falling in love with the dempseys but do to their size I cant keep as many in one tank....

It has been done, but they really have very different needs, water and food wise. Can you put the Dempseys in the 55g instead?

I agree with fishboy. Housing JD's with mbuna is just a bad idea. I could list many reasons (such as water condition requirements), and will if you would like, but I would avoid mixing the two.

Thanks guys,

Im not sure where Im gonna end up on this one yet. But I keep hearing mainly the same thing you three are saying. As far as water conditions, Two of the 4 are currently residing in my 55g. in ph at 8.6. and they are holding up with the fish and conditions excellently. They were shy for about 1 day, and now they roam the tank around my africans and in plain sight of me all day long. The other two sit in my 10g. in ph 8.0. Im gonna return two of the 4 as soon as I setup my 125g.

Diet, however, seems to be another issue. The two in the mbuna tank recognize feeding time, but it seems as if they almost pass on the flake and bioblend mix I feed the mbuna. They take a stab or two at it, then their interest declines. Im wondering how dropping small feeders in will bother the mbuna. Or using two different foods will affect my fish. Ill probably experiment once or twice before I make my final decision. \

I was planning on selling off the 29g. and 55g. once the big tank gets going( and crossing my fingers my wife will let me have another bigger tank!!!! :idea2: eventually.) But in order to keep the JD's I just may keep the 55g. for the time being....

Thanks again
Luke
