Working on getting my new 75 gallon tank set up. I am seriously considering the Eheim Ecco 2236 canister filter. Anyone have any experience or opinions? It will be a simple community tank, nothing terribly complicated.

Also, thinking of ordering it from Big Al's. Any opinions on that company would also be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cant loose with Big Al's, reliable and free shipping still going on. As far as the filter I can only recommend what I know has worked best for me having used both basket type and circumference type filters. Both work but circumference style works far better IMO and according to heavy industry. Recommend the Magnum 350 for crystal clear water. $94 at Big Al's with free shipping.

Thanks! The Magnum 350 is the other filter that I am considering. Good to know that Big Al's is reliable too. (yeah, the free shipping is very appealing, also their prices are lower than PetSmart for the very same filters)

OH one other thing. I diden't realize you were considering the Ecco which is Eheims lowest brand filter line. I know the motor on these are not thermally protected against dry running should the pump loose prime water and overheat damaging the motor. There are quite a few threads and post about this occurring repeatedly. Because most basket type filter "motors/impellers" are top mounted they need to be circuit protected becasue when they run dry (no water) they overheat and burn up as water falls to the bottom of the canister out of reach of the motor.

Incidentally becasue the Magnum brand filters are the only brand filter with a bottom canister motor design they are self continuous priming, making them almost impossible to loose prime. But even if they do lose prime becasue the motor and impeller are on the bottom they can never run dry and stay submerged in water keeping the impeller and motor cool no matter what. Why there are so many still working after 20+ years.

A 2236 will be underpowerd for a 75, a 2217 would be a much better suit for a 75.
