Does anyone know how rare these are in the aquarium trade? I must say they are on par with Rams and other colorful cichilids aesthetically. I'm going to be inheriting a pair of these with a 29 gal tank from a friend of mine who's graduating.

So basically I'm wondering if anyone else has had any experience with these guys and would know apropriate tank mates etc...(I'd like to put them in with Blue Rams and a school of some sort of peaceful schooling fish)

You can't keep sunfish with fish smaller than them.

They will bully or eat them.

never heard of an orange-spot sunfish. how big are they? pumpkinseeds are considered the most colorful and are found more in the eastern part of the US. redear sunfish are common here in the central portion of the US and have similar colors to the pumpkinseed, just not allover their bodies like they do. there are some pygmy sunfish but I've never seen one so I'm not sure what it looks like. How long has your friend had these fish and how big are they? I would compare a sunfish with most highly aggressive cichlids as far as temperament. A local clubmember keeps some sunfish with his Pike cichlids, that should give you an idea of what they can stay with because pike cichlids will try and eat fish bigger than they are! rams would be a quick snack to anything but a pygmy or a bluegill and those would likely kill the rams anyway. They are about ~3 inches long(slightly more). I will try and take a picture of them. What I've read about Orangespotteds online is that they cap out in length at about 4 inches and are suitable for SA setups.

I keep and have kept sunfish.

I can tell you that even 4" sunfish can get agressive.

I have a pumpkinseed right now.

Any small fish is a danger to be eaten.

And when the spawning urge comes the sunfish will get very territorial.

If you have a pair- male adn female- just keep them by themselves.
