Oscar Died, Nitrate poisoning?

Thanks for all the advice, Im definitely going to get a bigger tank in the future and try again with an oscar. That way I have a little more room for mistakes with the extra water. Any smaller cichlids that would be fun like an oscar for my 55g ? I really like their personality and the way they beg for food.

fishorama and akapaul have what I feel to have the best answers as to possibly why. DOC's are in all water to varying degrees. A huge shift in water chemistry in a single day coupled with a pre-existing stressful condition was possibly the final straw.

Try to remember that the water didn't change overnight to that degree and it can't be undone overnight safely either. I came close to killing some of my fish doing the same thing but luckily I stopped myself in time and did smaller daily changes until I guesstimated I had changed 80% or more of the water.

Most of all, sorry for your loss! I know how attaching an Oscar or any fish can be.

I have seen Oscars that make a 125 look like a fishbowl!

Almost without exception any member of the cichlid family are pathetic beggars when it comes time to eat! Convicts, JD's, Green Terrors, Pink Convicts, and angelfish come to mid for a 55. My angelfish and Pink cons get all excited and wiggle (yes they wiggle) like a happy puppy when I walk in the room! If you go with New World Cichlids, water parameters aren't quite as dedicated as going with Africans.

A 55 would be a nice size for a variety of the africans.

I second the idea of the 55 or even a 75 if possible. It has the same footprint in most cases it is just taller. I alsolike the idea of Africans in that size tank. They are fun to watch and they are very colorful.

Sorry for the loss of your Oscar. When you lose a fish like this it is like losing a friend. So sorry.
