What kind of algae do otos eat?

and is it "oto" or "otto"?

do they eat decaying plants? Not that i have any in my tank

Otocinclus-oto

they prefer soft algae including diatom-brown algae..I have never seen them eat beard algae, hair algae, green slime algae(cyano bacter)
if you are lwo on algae, oto's have a tendecy to eat a lot of algae)
you can substitute: algae wafer, , cucumber, zuccini(blanched) other squashes.

keep in mind if they have never eaten this they will need to get accustomed to it..I have had oto's refuse everything except algae..

they are terrific catfish but can be difficult to keep.

I have algae that covers the tank sides, and (I dunno if this is algae) black stuff covering my plants... but I know that my oto likes to eat something off my plants... and one refuses to come off my filter.... makes sense to me...

In my experience the algae that pops up the sides and backs of my tanks is usually brown algae, or diatoms. Otos love this stuff. The black stuff you're talking about sounds like brush algae, which is a pain. It's hard to clean off manually and otos won't touch it. Apparently SAE's will, but I don't know from experience because they're rather hard to find.

When I don't have enough algae for my oto, I feed him zuchinni. I usually buy it fresh, peel it, cut it in to small slices and then put them in freezer. Then when I pull out a slice or two to drop in the tank (thawed first) it's soft and will sink. Just make sure you don't leave it in there for more than 24 hours or you can really have a mess on your hands.
