then you just happen to have naturally fertile soil.. which is a rarity these days. most farms after 2 or 3 seasons, the soil has been depleted of its nutrients and needs to be replenished or the crops will not grow well enough to make a profit.

We, as humans, did not claw our way to the top of the food chain to eat only vegetables. I don't care what anyone else eats as long as they don't care what I eat. I am not out trying to ban vegetables because they deplete the soil, so leave my meat alone. I personally don't hunt any more, but will sit down at any hunters table and eat what meat AND vegetables they have. People in Ontario fought and had the spring bear hunt cancelled because they were worried about the mommy bears being shot (which is illegal anyway) and what would happen to cute babies. No evidence was offered, but because of people like PETA that know nothing of the reality of hunting and game management had it banned. We now have a problem of too many bears. Some of which are taking horses down. Anyone that knows black bears will tell you that they will not go hunting for horses unless very hungry or overpopulated. This has nothing to do with the horse topic, but stupid laws are usually made by people that know nothing of the facts such as what was made in banning the spring bear hunt.

here's a link to an article describing how Illinois' governor, Rod Blagojevich, just signed a law banning the slaughter of horses in Illinois for human consumption.

http://www.illinois.gov/PressReleases/ShowPressRelease.cfm?SubjectID=1&RecNum=5995

If you can kill and eat cows, pigs, sheep, rabbits, chickens, ducks, fish, bison, ostriches, etc., should horses be exempt?

I completely agree. My friend brought that up and how "horrible" it was to slaughter horses. I just said "If we slaughter cows and pigs why can't we slaughter horses? Just because they're so 'pretty'?" Really, either stop the slaughter of all or none. It's not that I don't like horses. It just isn't fair.

I also live in Canada, BC to be exact, and I see many bears every year, most times right out my window. I'm very happy Ontario made that law, it is horrible that people would shoot any bears. In BC at least, most people don't eat them, so thats even worse.

BTW, we never clwaed our way to the top of the food chain, we were lucky enough that we got alot of brain power, and we should use that very wisely.

i agree, most bears become problems when they are intentionly feed by humanes, not because of the cancelation of the spring bear hunt, after all there is still the fall one!

i like meat
i like steak
Human didnt become top of the food chain to eat salad. but of course ill have a salad with my steak. and a salad with shrimp vinnagarette next time i have lobster.

you vegetarians act like slaughter is terrible. arent you killing a plant when you eat it? the plants die in terrible terrible ways. they are taken by the root out of the ground. and they are starved for nutrients untill you boil grill otherwise cook and eat them. its a long slow death for the plant. and even if you eat it raw. its still is chewed up and then exposed to HCL.

Tofu. Its more nutritous then meat, and the good thing about it is you don't have to kill a living being.

isnt tofu made from soy milk?
doesnt soy milk come from soybeans?
arent soybeans alive?

NEWSFLASH to get tofu you still have to kill a living being.

I don't mind that. They almost need meat to survive, while we don't. They are carnivores. I have no trouble feeding them meat.

but you are still killing to fill your pooches stomach.
if you truly believed in ending the "violence" of slaughter, then you would feed you animals grains. but since you think its ok for a dog to eat a horse why is it not okay for ME to eat a horse.

you don't always need to use fertilizer, i know i don't use anything strange in my gardens!

and you are attempting to partially feed one family. you are not completly living off this produce, nor marketing it or attempting to sustain multiple family's. there is a vast differnce between feeding a population and supplementing a family diet. yes, you can grow produce without fertilizer on a small scale and short term, but it requires more land and more labor that scales up exponentially as the yield goals are raised. it is only with modern agronomics and shipping that humans have the absolute luxery of complaining about how well fed they are. the rationing of the world wars or the great depression or anytime up until the modern age simply didn't allow people to survive and complain about how their food was grown. now that theres plenty of food available, they have soemtihng to complain about.
