Hello!
I recently bought a house and it came with an outdoor fish pond and a koi. I would like to get some advice on how to clean it since it has a few leaves and also how often I should change the filter. Please help me because it's the first time I'm in charge of a fish.
Thank you! :girl:

I also recently bought a house with an outdoor fish pond. It contains goldfish. There are several leaves, and the water is getting low after the heater has been in it all winter. What is the best way to get the water level back up and clean the leaves and algae out? I have considered moving the fish to a tub and doing a full clean out, then putting in new water and treating it. What would be the difficulties I am going to face in migrating the fish?

Any advice would be appreciated...

Hi Gabriella, I would take the top part of the water out of the pond and place it in another container and then place the fish in there. Remove the rest of the water from the pond, hose down the sides and get the wet vac out and remove all the sludge from the bottom of the pond. Put some water back in the pond with a condition to get rid of chlorines and chloramines and then put some of that water into the container with the fish, add a little more and keep doing this so that the fish will have pretty much the same water to go back into the pond and it won't go into pH shock.

Yours Koily, Lorraine

usually everyone drains there pond for spring clean outs
i just finished draining mine
the above post pretty much says it all. to drain the water you can use a power head with tubing pointed out of the pond. save some of the water in big rubbermaid bins, big enough to hold the fish. when the water is low enough about 12" you can safely net the fish out and place them in the rubbermaids.
then net out most of the leaves and muck, continue to siphon until you get most of the water out, its not crucial to get it completely empty.
refill it with a hose, and pond chlorinator. clean out the filter, and possibly replace the media if you know what brand filter you have. i always start fresh each spring. hook everything back up and let the filter run. wait about an hour to put the fish back in the pond.
also cover the rubbermaids, fish jump! place a screen or something over it
dont feed for about a week
change and/or clean the filter once a month is usually good enough
good luck :p:
ponding is really fun
youll be hooked on koi once you get the hang of it :)
