Its been a couple years since i have been on here, I had a 72 gallon bowfront with mollies of varying breed and some plecos, which is regardless, anyway I am pretty good on the general upkeep, everything else, but I am planning on constructing a 6x5 4-5 foot deep outdoor pond. I plan on live Veg, filtering, etc. I want koi, but i would love suggestions on other hardy fish that can handle north carolina winters, as I will not be able to move them indoors. Also, things that will help to keep predators from my fish.
It is a very new project, so any suggestions would be much appreciated, and i will provide info/ plans as it progresses.

Right now I'm looking at koi pond filters on retail sites and getting little viable info. Can anyone reference me to a decent brand/model with a 500G capacity and filtering that is fish friendly?

Your dimensions seem a little wierd.....6 x 5 x 5 ? Sounds more like a pit. While you will have plenty of depth not much length or width...why these dimensions?

I want to grade it, from approx 3.5 feet to approx 4.5 feet in depth, the length and width are restricted by the location

Here is a site that does homemade filters
http://www.backyardguide.com/homemade-pond-filter.html I made one on a smaller scale for a 100 G pond and it worked well, but the maintence on mechanical filtration was a pain for me. I removed it and started using a uv steralizer only.
works awesome !! Try to filter naturally with plants (hornwart, water lettuce, water hyacinth) All these work good for cover and filtration.Make sure you have shelfs to put other plants on. Hope this helps Doug
