overstocking? why is it so bad?

These stocking guidelines were developed for the average fishkeeper who rarely does a waterchange. Does not know about the cycle, and if there is something wrong goes out to buy a chemical to "fix the problem" If you are more into the hobby, and know what you are doing then feel free to stock according to what you think you can handle.

I agree.

May I suggest you value truth and honesty over hurting others feelings? India does have one of the most serious AIDS problems in the world - conveniently forgetting that does not help those people. India has the second most people living with AIDS in the world, right behind South Africa. In a country of more than 1 billion people... India is a great analogy to a tank that is overstocked and not taken care of properly.

Thank you.

If an owner is negligent to his tank and does not properly clean it, then overstocking is asking for trouble. And in nature, fish are not crowded to such a degree as of that in a tank crowded with fish. If you can keep the water clean enough for the fish, then go for it.

And I think we all know how AIDs is spread. By ignorance and/or carelessness. People simply dont know. A whole lot like a beginning fishkeeper who carelessly overstocks his/her tank and doesn't take care of it.

Besides, OG must be getting tired of locking threads after I "give in" and add my two cents.....lol...

Sorry. Sometimes I don't think the pile stinks enough and feel compelled to grab a stick and give it a good stir. Call it a character flaw. :o

Having too many fish in a tank compared to the amount of water will in the end result in the death of some of those fish. It doesn't matter how clean you keep the water ,fish will die.

I once had a tank that was 100g and filled with so many fish(size ranging from 2" to 6") that there should have been traffic lights to ease the congestion. Now on this tank I had a 24h drip system replacing the whole tank every 24 hours, it also had a very big filtration system on it too. In this tank nitrates rarely got over 5 ppm ,ammonia and nitrite where always zero, so the water was in better shape than most tanks with very few fish and regular water changes. In this tank a strange thing always seemed to happen, the fish would slowly die off over a few months, so I would add more to replace them and it would happen again and again and always the fish die offs would stop until around a certain amout of fish remained. I then left it as was b/c I was sick of replacing them. They then lived a happily with only one or two fish dieing every now and again.

My point is that there are other factors involved that will affect the health of your fish, you may not believe it but fish actually are alive and they swim around b/c they have a thing called a nervous system and brain combined with bones, muscles and other living cells. Now just like you and I or even your cat or dog if those functions are stressed, disease and death is inevetable.

Why not learn from other people mistakes and either get rid of some of the fish or get a bigger tank or better yet buy another tank to the extra fish in.

well played ashdavid...

Uh cuz i started with like 5 of them? I don't have anywhere to move them and i try to sell them. Would you rather i flush them down the toilet? If you bothered looking at the picture the fish still have adequate swimming space its not that bad.
i didn't say that now did i now if your an experianced fish keeper you should know that guppies multiply fast now its understandable if your new at the hobby and you didnt realize this but you have options you can cull the fry i.e. if you have another fish tank feed the fry to your other fish or you could get another 10 gallon and a filter what thats only about 20 - 25 bucks (if you left it bare bottom) and when i posted my comment i wasnt going after you anyway i was sayin why purposly overstock in the first place

Okay say a person has there own room they keep it clean and evrything. Now 10 people share another room of the same size They keep it just as clean as the other person does. Everyone is bumping into each other nobody can sleep and everybody gets sick really quickly because disease spreads so quickly. Do you get my point?

compltely
