Do you think that this filter will provide sufficent O2 levels? Or should I add an airstone?

if it's for the 5.5 dp tank, I think it's too small. the Azoo Palm Filter is really designed for bowls or small tanks (probably 1.5 gal or less). my rule of thumb for filtration is, try to circulate 10X tank volume per hour. So for the 5.5 gal, strive for at least 50 gallons per hour of filtration.

With hang-on-tank filters, an easy way to increase aeration is to lower water level. that way, the splashing action of the water returning to the tank is enough to oxygenate the tank.

if you really want good oxygenation, try going with a Whisper Internal 3i. they filter the water and are driven by an air pump, and if it does turn out to be for your 5 1/2 gallon, you could always go with one at each end to even out the filtration.

Yes, the tiny Azoo filter is too small at 16 gph. I guess you could go with 2, but if it were me I'd want at least 3 or 4 of them to circulate water adequately.

Especially with dp's as messy eaters, they need lots of filtration. However, because they're so small and not strong swimmers, they also can't have high current. Thus is the dilemma. I think the Whisper internal filters are perfect for them because they don't cause a lot of current, which also means less surface agitation to aerate your water. So you might want to use a Whisper internal with an airstone :)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! :)

Do you think this one would be too much current?

I found the whipser here ... it goes in the tank... how much room will that take up in a little 5.5g? (It just looks like such a small tank to me)

The Aquaclear is a good filter. It may produce a lot of current, being a HOB, but that's easily remedied by a link that Boxermom from dwarfpuffers.com always suggests http://www.petfish.net/kb/entry/13/347/
It's really easy. Just basically tape a piece of a soda bottle to direct the flow backwards toward the tank wall. I haven't tried it myself, tho.

The Whisper you linked to is exactly the one I use with my dp's. Mine used to be in a 2.5 gal betta tank, so it will fit in your 5.5 and hardly take any space at all. The good thing about it is it's adjustable (with a little slider at the bottom) so you can always reduce the flow if you want. The only thing with that one is that its intakes are at the bottom, so I put a pantyhose stocking over it to prevent the puffers from getting sucked in.

hope that helps!
