Oxytetracycline???

I just lost (beetween yesterday and today) a gourami for what I think was hemorragic septicemia.

I treated him first with cooper sulfate bacause I thought there were parasites to blame, but that was my mistake, followed by a malfunctioning heater. My weak fish had the bacterial injuried that were soon followed by a heavy fungus infestation.

In the LFS I saw this Jungle product called FUNGUS CLEAR. The box claims it can control septicemia, cause the product attack both bacteria and fungus.

I haven't had much good luck using Jungle products medications. They just don't seem to be strong enough, and they don't say the # mg's each recommended dosage (1 teas.) is suppose to contain. A few other websites said oxytetracycline is the only thing that really truly works against septicemia, so I am trying to locate some. Jehmco has some, but is large amounts and same with fishyfarmacy (with a min. $25 order). Since I have them in a hospital tank, I don't think I would need that much and don't want too much on hand or it will expire before I can use it.

I used mardels tetracycline on my swordtail that had septicema. The water foamed on top and the water turned red.It worked and six months later my swordtail is alive.

I have some of that tetracycline and I think I might try that. I treated for a couple days with triple sulfa and nothing seemed to change. Then I did a couple days with Mardel's Maracyn 2 which has minocycline in it and is suppose to be for internal infections and h.s. But the angels didn't have a good reaction to that stuff and were stressed and their fins actually got worse looking. So I stopped using that. I have some Furan 2 which is suppose to work for it and I also have regular tetracycline too. I put in the Furan 2 last night and the angels had a better response to it immediately. I am not sure if their fins will get better or stay the same. If they don't get better in a couple more days, I may switch it up this weekend and just try the tetracycline. I can honestly say that everytime I have tried to use Maracyn 2 (minocycline) I have never had a good response from my fish. It really appears to stress them out and doesn't seem to do anything at all for their infections. Kind of disappointing since it is advertised as being specially for internal infections.

I've used the stuff from the farm and feed stores. Usually can find it in smaller tubes for around $5, listed for pigs, cows, chix, horses. Check the formulation (how much oxytet it contains) and shoot for 15ppm treatment.
It tends to foam pretty good so try to minimize any aeration (from airstones, water falling into the tank from filter, etc).
The stuff I used was labelled Tetracycline Hydrochloride Soluble Powder-324 Antibiotic. I used it for columnaris and it worked great!

P.s. the search box in the upper right corner works well! ;)
