I have had a Red Bellied Pacu for the last 3 years or so. Everything was going along fine untill this morning. I sat down on the couch to tie my boots and saw something on the floor, I looked closer and saw that it was my Pacu, 6 feet away from the tank and dead as a doornail. I looked to the tank, knowing that the lids had been in place when I went to bed. The Pacu had hit the top of the Acrylic tank and broke a 12' long section out and propelled himself to his doom. Never in a million years would I have thought that he could break the 1/4" thick top of the tank, but I have no doubts now.

I have a few fish left, but will most likley sell my tank now. I had bought the bigger tank for the Pacu, now it looks pretty empty. So think before you buy a Pacu, they are a MAJOR pain in the ***!

Jesus how much bigger do you need? Had a 167 gallon.

Since they can grow to 2 feet+ in length, 200 gallons or more is what they need...if they are going to be the only fish in there. As in 1 fish.
People sport fish for them in their native waters in South America.

Ok, Sublime types faster than I do...hehe.

Wow, that guy was 17" head to tip of tail.
I agree, it probably jumped to escape its confinement.
These guys feel more secure in schools, and need MUCH more space than a 167g. By the looks of it, the fish could barely turn the width of the tank.
They need much wider tank, usually tanks don't come that wide unless they are specially made.

I almost got ahold of a 200 Gallon tank last year, but someone bought the tank while I went home to measure the space. Oh well, I think I am about finished with fish. I don't have time anymore to mess with them. Anyone interested in buying a tank?

Sorry for your loss....don't get discouraged!
