:mad2: Snapped this when I was in Asia 2 weeks ago.
There was an interesting article on how painted fish are not perceived as animal cruelty in Asia. So unfortunatley, the painted fish industry is still going strong in Asia, even though it has not taken off in Western countries.

...What kind of fish are these anyway? They look like Sailfin Mollies to me.

That entire species is an abomination anyway. They're test-tube fish that are so poorly formed they can't even close their mouths properly most of the time.. If ever a fish deserved to be boycotted, that's the one. Nice stocking level there too..

I did notice alot of them had their mouth open, I thought they were gasping for air.
And the photo snap is about 1/4 of the tank size, and thats about half the number of fish in the 3ft tank.

That is horrible, I can hardly believe they survive for any length of time in such cramped conditions!

Just as an aside, I bought 2 BP cichlids (undyed!) as little gray juvies when I first started keeping fish. At the time, I didn't consider the ethics of manmade hybrid fish so please don't flame, lol. Anyway, I wouldn't buy them again, as there are so many fascinating natural species that I would like the experience of keeping, but I have to say they are by far the most personable fish I have. Also, they cannot close their mouths, but they have no trouble competing for food with a large severum and firemouth.

probably similar to their tank raised fish for table fare.

Will you please stop judging fish and calling them names?!

Since all of the BPs I have ever seen are bred with convicts, resemble them, are just as fast as them, and can eat better than other fish, I support my claim above.

Though I do agree that there should be NO dyed ones, and all of them should be bred so they can close their mouths properly.

And that's horrible, hope those ppl get jammed in a small room for a year eating crud on the floor!

Our lfs has those also, sad isn't it..........:headshake2:

Why should I not judge a genetic experiment that seems to have gone wrong? Who are you to tell me I cannot state my opinion of these fish? All of my LFS's are full of these mutants and I've never seen one that can close its mouth. To me, they're disgusting and shouldn't exist. I'm not saying to kill them all. I'm saying they should never have been created to begin with. If you can't handle such an opinion without getting offended, I suggest you go watch cartoons instead of trying to participate in a serious discussion about fish genetics.
