Hi I just signed up to ask a question about my 2 painted tetra fish. I have a blue one and a pink one and I love watching them as they are highly entertaining, but browsing around sites, I heard about dyed fish. That certain fish are dyed for colour. Are painted tetra dyed fish or are they normally that colour. This is worrying me now.

They sound like they are most certainly dyed. How long have you had them? If it's only been a short time, soon you will notice the color fading away. The dye they are injected with is not permanent. The pink one will probably return to its natural color before the blue one. No doubt you have already seen the anti-dyeing website http://www.deathbydyeing.org/. If not, check it out, it will tell you a lot about the process and the effect it has on a fish's health and life span. It also has a list of the most commonly dyed fish species with many pictures so you can know what to look for on a dyed fish. Many, many fishkeepers out there detest the practice and refuse to buy any dyed fish. Don't feel bad about getting these fish...you already have them and no doubt they are in a much better home now. You just didn't know what was done to those fish. The fact that you took the time to look up fish dyeing and ask questions about it shows that you do care about your fish. It is really horrible that the unscrupulous fish dealers out there take advantage of the general public's ignorance about dyed fish and keep on inflicting the cruelty. Now that your eyes have been opened, so to speak, just don't buy any more dyed fish in the future. Familiarize yourself with the natural appearance of any fish you are considering getting and spread the word about what a 'painted' fish REALLY is. For every person you convince to not buy dyed fish, that is a few dollars more that won't be going into the pockets of despicable and greedy fish dealers covering up animal cruelty and deceiving unknowing people with an innocent-sounding word like 'painted'.

Thanks

Thanks for all the information, I probably had the Blue one for about 2 weeks and the pink one not even a week yet. I feel so bad for them. And i was at the LPS yesterday and wanted the purple painted tetra, lol not anymore when I know what they have done to them. They seem fine though.

Sometimes dyed fish can go on to live a fairly normal life after the dye fades away, but it is pretty common for them to not live as long as they would have without being dyed. If they suddenly fall ill one day it will most likely not be because of anything you did. 'Sanitation' and 'sterile conditions' are things unheard of in the fish dyeing room. Even if the fish you have did not contract any diseases from the injection, there is the carcinogenic dye for their bodies to contend with. Ugh, it's just horrible. :( I'd go back to that fish store and let them know I wasn't too happy about being deceived and that I won't be buying anything from them again until they stopped selling dyed fish...but that's just me. Good luck with your tetras, I hope they do well for you.

Thanks, i'll keep them posted I guess, they look healthy and fine. And i'll just mention that they shouldn't sell dyed fish but i will still buy from there. The shop is close to me and i dont feel like going far out for fish, lol.

Thanks for that link sky.eyes.woman. Extremely informative. Man, such atrocities in service of the all mighty dollar. I must be naive. I knew of dyed fish, but I had no idea to what levels these people have stooped. I have never even seen or heard of some of these chemically injected fish...that polka dot gourami makes me cringe. I'm just glad I don't see these abominations at my LFS. But someone, somewhere, must be buying these freakish fish, or else they would stop with this crap already.

Cardinals and neons are about as colourful as tetras get naturally
Why oh why do people try to improve on nature?!
sorry to hear you have been duped and I hope your fish survive their experince. In the UK our best selling fish mag (Practial Fish Keeping) has a whole campaign based aorund boycotting dyed fish - I am proud to say both my LFS's have signed up to it.

Shops that sell painted fish or otherwise altered fish should be hogtied, dragged through a pit of wood stain, soaked in food coloring, injected with pen ink, forced to swim in a tank full of vomit and ammonia (with a little bubbly clam opening and closing), and fed Grape Nuts cereal for life. Don't ask me how I really feel!

Well my painted tetra seem fine still. I am just worried about them now because I am reading that they die early. God I should complain to the dam shop for not telling me about them.

Don't feel guilty for buying them. You didn't know. It is a very sick practice and I have no idea why anyone would even come up with such an idea.
