paludariums bottoms?

wait. styrofoam. that sounds like it might be hazardout to animals. what kind of creature are you puting in there?

I'm going to go with the safe side and seal the whole thing before putting the dirt and moss in. I'm curious if I should put down and an active carbon base layer?

What were you planning on using the styrofoam for.....if its a water feature then yes seal it and seal it well if its anything else dont even bother using it....its messy and hazedous

and dont use the carbon it will do a good job at clening in the beginning but once it is saturated it will begin releasing the toxins back into the enviroment used a layer of hydroton (clay pellets)

Base layer for what? the soil? If so, be sure and place something like window screen above the base layer (don't use carbon, btw. Hydroton is good, but gravel works as well. Another option is a false bottom with eggcrate) so your soil doesn't mix with the base layer/water.

Awesome Thank you, guys! I have most of my materials. I'm just waiting to get the sealant. I'm most likely going to get the silicone from petmart.com. Where would I get the eggcrate from?

I would save on shipping and just use GE Silicone I, you can find it at almost any hardware store. I've only found eggcrate at Home Depot.

Eggcrate (lighting diffuser) will be in the lighting department at any home improvement store.

I second using GE I; besides being cheaper, it also comes in black and is a little less viscous than standard aquarium sealant, so it goes on smoother. Be sure to get the 'Windows and Doors' formula rather than the 'Kitchen and Bath' formula. You should be able to get it at the home improvement store as well. You will need a caulking gun for the GE I.
