Hey guys. I have a question. So I have a panther grouper in my tank along with 2 true percs, yellow tang, and a pipe fish. They are going along fine. The thing is my mom likes the grouper so much she wants to offer me money to get a second grouper in the tank. Is that a good option or will they get aggressive or fight? I have a 55gl tank.

first off, a panther grouper will get waaaay to big for a 55. more than 1/2 the lenth of that 55 at it's full growth. I also wouldnt recomend keeping if it you are attached to those clowns and dont want to be saying goodbye once it gets bigger.
I, personaly, think it is pretty irresponsible (for the most part) for most stors to sell panther groupers. jsut about all of the ones i have seen in stores are sold at about 3 inches or under, which gives the buyer the impression that their tank is large enough. But in time, these fish can actualy reach lengths of about 30 inches! the average aquarist doesnt have, or even have the room/money for a tank large enough to hold one of these, and from what i have seen, most stores do not warn their costomers about it.
I would find a larger home for the grouper.
or if your mom likes him so much, convince her to buy you a 220 gallon :dance2:

The only thing I see to add is that pipefish and all the others in your tank have compleatly different enviromental needs. while your tank is probably set up to accomadate the grouper, tang and clowns the pipefish needs a home more or less like a seahorse tank, meaning low flow and other fish that are not food agressive as they tand to snick at their food while moveing about slowly and may not get enough when compeating with the grouper and clowns.

Sorry to say it, but..

As much as you may find these fish attractive, they are really not suited for most aquariums short of 220 gallons or larger, and even then, these are large predatory fish that need lots of space, and plenty of good filtration.

If you like the look of the black and white, or the way that the fish swims/hunts, why not go for a more manageable fish like a snowlfake eel or a smaller lionfish species?

Granted, you would still not be able top keep these w/ your current fish, especially the clowns (key word=preds) but you would be able to enjoy them without jeaprodizing the wellbeing of the fish.

Hope this helps.

Ha. Thanks guys. Before I changed this tank I had a fish only tank. Then i changed it to reef. But i kept the panther grouper. I had a snowflake eel and a star and stripe puffer with the grouper. I know these fish grow real big, but I do want to keep this grouper for awhile until it gets bigger than I'll give or trade it off. My mom really likes the panther grouper because of its color and how it swims so gracefully moving like silk. If you guys have any idea if there is another fish out there that meets this description and are friendly with the fish I have so far than please do tell. So I could possibly purchase it for my mom.

try a Bangai/high-fin cardinalfish. they almost glide on the water and are usually very good community fish. if you want o keep things like eels, groupers, and puffers a predator tank should be set up with fish they wont eat. working in th trade ive seen to many people buy fish cause the looked cool and came back crying later. hope it all works out though.

good idea with the bangaii
how big is the panther? if it is one of the really small ones, does she like how they almost walk? in which case, a small fu manchu lionfish might do thetrick.onceit getbs bigger, you may have trouble with it andthe clowns, butit isless likely if you make sure it is always well fed.
