Pathetic things about my LFS.

i HATE superpetz with a passion. They have the WORST customer service ever. the management there are pure *******s, pardon my language, i just get sooo fired up when i think about them. They talk to you like you're a retard and they swear they know everything when they don't. The employees are better but i have to agree that they are understaffed. It takes forever to get any help. If you buy fish from them NEVER use their water and make sure you quaranteen you fish. If you've looked at their tanks you'll notice alot of them have a large infestation of hair algae and if not careful they'll make their way into your tank.

I actually helped them out one day and regret it to this day. I noticed the nurse shark had the tail of the remorra in its mouth and was gettin ready to devour the thing so i told the employees who all rushed to beat the shark off and feed it.

I drove 1 hour to The Aquarium Store in Maryland to find bigger selection of fish and MUCH better customer service. I HATE SUPERPETS.

My local fish store is alright clean water no dead fish. Of course they overstock(except on thier rarer fish). They only keep compatible fish in the same tank. Most of the time they give you correct imformation(except for stocking) if you ask for it. Their staff is very helpful and nice. The only problem the manager is unhelpful has an attitude. Everyone else is nice though.

Do you mean The Aquarium Center ? I grew up just down the street from the store and spend most of my days off there.

I don't know if you've been there recently but they are going down the same path. About six months ago they started tearing down most of their display tanks, including the 500 gallon reef tank, and put up signs that said that they were under construction. However they never did anthing with them, they just sit there full of cloudy water. Then they reorganized the dry good section so they could carry cat, dog and rodent supplies all contained in a 12 foot section (I assume this was there attempt to pick up some of the business from a pet store that closed down next door). It really quite comical to think how many sales they thought could generate from that. Now they've hired a bunch of teenagers that know so little that they would tell you that it's okay to put a Redtail Catfish in a betta bowl.

I guess I am lucky in my area all my lfs are feeling the competition from petco and petsmart. The ones that survived there invasion are very knowledgeable and helpful. Check out the site for aquatic discoveries it is one of the ones close to me. they have a 700 gallon salt tank with sharks a 600 gallon reef tank a 200 gal discus tank. and a never ending selection. Plus they fill any strange request.
:fairy: There is about 30 stores within 20 miles of where I live. I guess I can not move anyplace warm. I get 10 degrees out alot of snow no sunshine. But I can get good service.

The Aquarium Center is correct! and yes i did notice that their selection has gone down. i didn't spend much time in the dry goods but i was there last weekend and noticed that there were less fsh there than there was a year ago. I do remember the main reef tank being amazing when i first saw it, but this weekend it didn't have the same impact on me.

As for the employees i guess i was lucky enough to speak with a lady that knew her stuff.

I see nothing wrong with Annandale Super Petz as compared to anywhere else.

I've always thought the colorful tank labels were nice looking. ....and since I'm there at least every week, I notice he stocks so many different fish, that using erasable markers on the glass is the only way to go.

There definitely aren't many employees about, but the ones who are there "do" know what they are talking about.

Isolated incidents aside ........I've been going there for 2 years and think its awesome to have such a huge aquaria store within 3 miles of my house. The owners are very friendly....yet very busy. Typically there are at least 2 people checking out at any given time. I'd rather they keep the employee count low than hire unknowledgeable people.

Wally's rarely has much of a fish variety. It takes me less than 10 minutes to browse his whole store. ...where Superpetz is like a fish zoo. Its always interesting. fyi, the Lionfish tank has a large plastic lid and a larger warning sign. I'd say you have more chance of being bitten by their large noisy parrot than by a turtle or lionfish.

If there is a better fish store in MD/VA within a reasonable distance, please post them here. The next best I've seen is in Lynchburg.

Galaxie,

I hope my "review" didn't irritate you too much. That wasn't my intention at all. I've only been there once and visiting any type of store with two small kids and an impatient husband in tow can be taxing in itself. If I were there by myself, I *know* I would have had a more enjoyable visit. I really wanted to take a good look at all the cichlids, but the daughter and hubby wanted to see the marine fish and the little guy wanted to see the goldfish. I lost, as usual :(

Re: the tank labels. That's right they were written in glass marker, not labels. I think *some* tanks have paper labels though, don't they? Or am I losing my mind totally?

They DO have the best selection of fish in this area. I definitely will agree to that 100% and I do want to go back again. Either on my own or have everyone drop me off while they go somewhere else for a couple of hours.

The premise of this whole thread just seems petty to me.

Are we ranking the way a store labels their tanks?

They don't have good rocks or a CO2 system? I went to Target last week and they didn't have shoes or a shirt that I liked. Therefore Target sucks.

Poor customer service? Go to the front desk and tell them you are ready to purchase some fish.

Hair algae in all of their tanks? Notice they have/sell snails, plecos, and assorted algae eaters from all of their aisles, so they use it to feed their vegetarians. Besides, I have 3 tanks full of their fish and zero hair algae. ....and yes, I acclimate temperature then dump their bag of water.

Anyhow, 7/8 of the original post was praise, the last 1/8th was non-constructive criticism. ...and I say non-constructive because the words "suck" and "pathetic" were used. I think a person from Alexandria should be happy to have Super Petz a couple miles away. The alternative is going to PetSmart at Springfield Mall? ...maybe we'll have a get together there and count the dead fish.

Overall I think the original post could have been handled more tactfully.....especially since their company was mentioned by name.

Mentioning the store name is just a way to get the word around. After all, that is what this forum is all about isn't it? gettin the word around....

Yes, that confused me somewhat. We all know it's easier to know what you are thinking, then to type what you are thinking!

Hey, I claim first one to make that up!!
