I recently purchased a fish at a pet shop and was told it was a freshwater barracuda, however after hours of research I have discovered they were wrong. I am now the proud owner of a Payara, aka. Vampire Characin. Does any one know the proper care for this fish? Also what is the real value of this fish?
Thank you for your help.

the fish you have is actually quiet rare in the hobby, i personallty have never seen one, but it gets to be about 3 feet long max, so if you have a smaller aquarium it might be best to sell this one or give it away before it gets too big. what other fish do you have in there anyway?

The fish I have in with it right now, but soon to change are:
Spotted Gar, Chocolate Ciclid, Jack Dempsey, Green Terror.
Also Rosy Reds for food for him. And from what I have read so far it looks like all the other fish with him will be food too if I don't move them soon. Here is a pic of him.

yeah, i think you would do best to move him to another tank or sell him, if not now when he gits too big because those things have big mouths and he probably wont be afraid to take on your green terror once he gets bigger. and about the food it sounds like you are feeding him right.

I am just wondering, but what size tank do you have him in? It seems like a cool fish to keep if you can house it.

I've kept a couple payara for a while. I can't seem to get them off live food, and for some reason they mysteriously die after about 10 inches or so. Many people think this is because they don't get enough oxygen in the home aquarium, because they live in the white water where there is a ton of current and lots of oxygen. They do get huge. http://www.payara-fishing.com/about_payara.htm. That is a huge fish haha. Oh yea mine cost 35 each at 5-6inches
