Hello all! I've finally gotten my gudgeons, and today I saw them either spawning or planning on spawning.

A video....

Looking good!

Anyway, let me lay out the stats here for everyone.

It is a 10 gallon tank, currently without any plants. There are several 1/2 inch pvc pipes, cut to different lengths between 2 1/2 inches and 5 inches. My pH is around 7.6.
The gudgeons came from two sources; Mgamer20o0 and a store in Knoxville, TN.
The awesome thing is that the two currently shacking up are from different sources. This means, ideally, I will have a lot of genetic variation if I do in fact get a clutch.

I have been looking into raising the fry, and it doesn't look too hard. I think I would raise them in a net breeder in either that tank or in my larger tank, which might provide a more stable environment.
I read the they should be provided with moss to feel secure and provide infusoria.
Sources also mention to watch water quality.
For food, I plan on buying Golden Pearls. I would also buy microworms. I have frozen daphnia and baby brine shrimp.

According to what I've read, if I do get eggs, the male will guard and fan them. They will hatch in 2 to 3 days, but will remain attached to the pvc pipe for 6 to 7 days. After they detach, the male will no longer guard them, and may eat them.
To deal with this, I will move the entire pvc pipe into the net breeder, then net and remove the male when the babies start to become free swimming.

Peacock gudgeon fry age veeeeeery slowly. After a month, they will still be colorless, and only around 1/2 an inch. They will not be sexually mature until 6-9 months of age.

My mom will murder me if I get another tank. :( If I could, I would get another ten gallon to raise them in. However, I figure that it shouldn't be too bad to keep them in either a net or plastic breeder, until they are around 1/2 an inch. I put newborn guppies in with the gudgeons, and they don't eat them.

WE HAVE EGGS!!!!

I'm so excited! It's the first go, so I am not going to assume that this will work out this time. After all, all of us involved members are new to this. :o
I'm going to buy some golden pearls and microworms, to go along with my frozen daphnia and frozen baby brine shrimp.
I have a plastic floating fry holder that I will put the tube into.

Anyway, pics and vids!!!

Day 1

I have moved the males tube into a floating plastic fry trap. I should have cut the tube a little shorter, as it only fits at a slight angle. He would choose the longest one... all the other tubes are shorter!!
I have to give him credit for being such a brave daddy. I picked up the tube to move it into the trap, and he wouldn't leave for anything! That's a lot of devotion. :)
There isn't a ton of info on breeding them, but at least one source says the males rarely feed at this time. I found a method that gets him to eat at least some food. Using a small pipette, I suck up some thawed brine shrimp and bloodworms floating in water, and carefully pipe them to the front of the tube. The male carefully approaches and gulps them down. However, he is still not eating as much as usual, so I'll have to baby him a bit after the babies are free swimming.

Day 1

Also, I have ordered a tank divider (for when the fry get big enough to let out of the trap but still too small to be with the adults), and Golden Pearls sizes 50-100 and 200-300 from KensFish.com. I have also ordered a mature microworm culture from Skeeterbytes.com. I also have a whiteworm culture I am working on.

Still Day 1

Thank you, WeedCali!!!

I have a few more photos, showing the whole tank, and the fry trap with the tube. Dang, I wish I'd cut that shorter!! Oh well.
Also, it's a LOT harder to get good pics of the inside of the tube now, because my camera wants to focus on the slits in the fry trap rather than the male.

Entire tank.

And a bad photo of the male with his eggs.

Also, I'd REALLY REALLY REALLY love for anyone to comment or anything on this. Gimme a break, I'm a proud new parent!!!

Congrats!! I think you have a solid plan. Mine keep spawning and my kuhlis eat the eggs. I can't wait to be able to put them in a breeding tank.

Looks good!!
