Hi,

I'd like to finish off my tank by adding a pair of Peacok Gudgeons, but I'm having a hard time finding anyone who stocks them - in fact, most of the "kids" at Big Al's/Pet Smart either look at me blankly (never heard of them), or have no idea where I can get them.

Are their any members here from the Toronto area who might know a reputable LFS who stocks this fish or would order them for me?

By the way, my setup today:

20-gallon planted.

2 Honey Gouramis
4 Dwarf Neon Rainbows
4 Kuhli Loaches

sounds like you're plenty stocked to me. maybe even overstocked. you should return 2 khuliis, and leave your tank the way it is.

You think so? I'm asking seriously, not trying to challenge you, so please don't take this the wrong way - when I look at your specs, you have 7 fish in a 10-gallon. The dwarf rainbows won't get that much larger than your rasboras, and there's one less of the rainbows, so to my way of thinking, my 4 rainbows = your 5 rasboras. One honey Gourami = your betta, and if your pleco is fully grown, he'll more than equal one of my kuhlis. So to me, it seems I have 4 more fish in twice the volume of water you have. I've deliberately chosen fish that won't exceed 2.5 inches (maybe the kuhlis eventually, but they shouldn't get larger than 3 inches max).

I test my water frequently - everything is fine, and I do a 20-25% water change weekly (religiously). The fish aren't acting agressive - the rainbows school happily together, and the male Gourami is working on a bubble nest (he does sometimes chase the female away from the nest, but most of the time, they're peaceful). Even the kuhlis are often seen in the day foraging in the gravel. In other words, they don't seem stressed at all. You think adding two more small fish will overstock this tank?

Again, I'm looking to learn here, and gladly take advice from more experienced members - I'm just looking to understand more about this great hobby!

yes, true, you could compare yours to mine, except mine is not OS on the bottom. khuliis get 4 1/2 " max IME, my mother kept two in a 20G for many years. you don't have too much stock in mid water really, but you have too much in the bottom, and from what I understand, gudgeons are bottom dwelling. so, theoretically, you could get more midwater fish, but you will have too much on the bottom when they are full grown. no gudgeons, but you should get more bows. you're not OS yet, but when the khuliis are grown, you will be.

Thanks fc22! This kind of advice is very helpful. I didn't consider the different water-level preferences. I'll keep learning.

any other concerns?
