I recently acquired some fish which I have liked for a while but been unable to find in Texas. That being the Peacock Gudgeon.

I had them less then 2 weeks when two of the males took up roost in some pieces of PVC pipe I had supplied and prompty encouraged some females to spawn.

In one tube I can see the eyes of the fry but they are not free swimming yet. I have removed the father from this tube and placed the tub in a seperate tank.

The other tube still has daddy inside and eggs, but none showing hatched yet. From what I have been able to garner once I see eyes and hatched fry I can remove the father. Has anybody else around here had expereince breeding these fish and have any insights?

Pics of fry and tubes probably coming tomorrow when I get home from work.

Actually Z_man, your article is one of the ones i've read. It's a great article and is what i'm working off of right now.

Right now I have alot of little pairs of eyes on the sides of the pipe but not free swimming yet, and the father still fanning them.

They are in a tank which also has some paradise fish fry in it from a recent spawning (Put paradise fish in a tank to help keep it cycled while I was waiting on the gudgeons to arrive and lo and behold they spawned.) So there are already BBS being put in and some liquid fry food for them.

The paradise fish also seem to like water fleas, have you had Peacocks display any of the same tastes?

YAY

Z_man , thanks again for your article. I am now the proud owner of a small swarm (about 20-25) Peacock Gudgeon fry.

I moved the pipe , father and all, into a grow out tank I was already running for some paradise fish which had spawned (ergo why i know thier fry like daphnia). The fry are all about the same size and seem to be forming two groups in the tank.

Maybe it's strange, but I still get giddy the first time I get a new fish to spawn under my care. heh

The male was removed the isntant I looked in the tank and saw him in a little pipe with no fry.

Have you ever had a male nest with eggs and not fertilize them? The second male I had in a tube with eggs, the eggs never hatched or developed. They just stayed there and eventually started to fungus over.

Skippy,
As a matter of fact, that just happened this weekend. I keep two pair in each tank just in case one on the pair is infertile, there always is another to mate with. Every once and a while that happens.
