My definition:

pearling is the visual result of photosynthesis. when plants perform photosynthesis their 'waste' product is oxygen. when plants perform photosynthesis at a fast rate they create large o2 bubbles (pearls) that form on their leaves and then float to the surface.

pearling (rapid photosynthesis) is a result of optimal co2 levels in the tank and lots of lighting.

because a plant is not pearling does not mean that it is not photosynthesizing.

pearling is not essential to a healthy/happy planted aquarium.

I would add that not all plants pearl the same or even pearl at all.

Pearling can also be artificial resulting from the saturation of water with CO2 resulting in the appearance of pearling.

the point at which pearling occurs is debated at times 'o2 saturation in the water' and a few others but i think you should get the general point. "bubbles coming out of plants"

i have a hard time figuring out when i am pearling because i get the infamous 'sticky co2 bubbles' in my tank. and i cannot tell if i have co2 stuck to my plants or o2 coming out of my plants.

most plants really don't pearl all that much.

Riccia is one of the few plants that I am aware of that truly pearls.

Also, sometimes when a leaf or another part of the plants is damaged you will see gas bubbles escaping. Happened when I would trim my vals.
