The fish store I work at recently started selling this particular line of power filters...is anyone familiar with them? All the employees have been required to take them home and study them...take them apart, memorize parts lists, put them back together, and now we're having to test them out on our own tanks. Does anyone have any kind of opinion on these particular filters? Just from the short time I've had the one I'm having to test, I'm rather pleased with the results. The aquarium I'm running it on, a 29 gallon, seems to be altogether doing alot better since I've started running the Cascade filter on it. Does anyone else have experience with these filters? Have a different opinion or similar? I'm rather interested to hear what other people might have to say about this product.

My lfs talked me into buying one. I broke the cheap piece of crap trying to install the filter pad. Highly not recommended. There are a whole lot better filters out for just a few dollars more. jmo.

I just ordered one the other day and Ill let you know what I think when I get it up and running. I like peen-plax products ussualy and so I figured I would try this new filter out. and btw how do you break a filter putting a cartridge in? maybe you put it and wrong and then tryed to force it which could break any filter.
jmo

Really? You broke it? Which model was it? I really appreciate all this feedback...if I get enough negative feedback, I'm sure my boss would love to know so that he can discontinue ordering the product for our shelves...however, I have to agree with fishfreak21 on this one...maybe you were installing the cartridge the wrong way? I know with the cascade, it's not that difficult to do, considering how many cartridges you have to put in...

Yes it happened when I was installing the cartridge there was some resistence about half way down. I pulled it back out and tried again. I did this 3 or4 times . Finally it when in with a pop. I didnt think much of it because I didnt use that much force on it.So i put on the tank and I noticed it was leaking. So I took it off. It was cracked from the front(by the intake tube)down to the bottom by the first filter pad. It cracked way to easy. I think the plastic is too thin. I did fix it with silicon. Now before you make any judgements I have 9 tanks total with just about every filter out and this has never been a problem before.
This was the cascade 300. 300gph I dont think so . If you compare the flow of the cascade to the flow of ac300 its not even close.
I do like the two filter cartridge idea. Also the cartridges are made pretty tuff. Ive had mine for about 7 months and still using the same cartidges.
But still if I was going to recommend a power filter it would be the aqua clear line. jmo Tim

I love aquaclears too there may fav filter but the media gets kind of pricey when you have 3 500's running I also really liked the bio falls thing on the front of the cascade. It really was about the same price as the AC 300 there both like 22.00 on bigals.
My least fav filter ever was made by hydor it was the bravo line and had a cartridge that the water was fourced through well one night I heard alot of noise from the tank and the velcro on the sleeve had come loose and water was shooting straight up in the air. That was the last time it was used and why I have the cascade on order. Dont need another gieser at 3 in the morning in my living room

I dont understand pricey media for the ac. I put 2 sponges in my ac300. This was a year and a half ago. Just rinse them out . Ive heard tales on here of them lasting years. I dont use those carbon bags.

PennPlax Cascade 100

I bought a PennPlax Cascade 100 a week and a half ago and installed it on my seven gallon aquarium. It was way too noisy. The motor kept making a loud vibrating sound. We could hear it at night at the other end of the house. I disassembled it three times and cleaned the impeller assembly but nothing I did would quiet it down. The Cascade 100 was exponentially louder than my Whisper 5-15 and my AquaClear Mini. After three days of increasing noise I took it back to the lfs where I bought it and got my money back. I don't know if this filter was just a bad one and they are usually good but that is my experience.

I have a PennPlax Cascade 80 but that does not have room for a sponge cartridge in the media basket. I haven't tried it yet, mainly because I had such a bad experience with the 100 model.
