my husband has become interested in this now, and last night was searching for filters. As I want to go with a canister, he found these Penn Plax Canister filter. He thinks I should go with the 1200. Its suitable up to 150g, and will do 315gph. He said thats a 5.72 rating (how many times my tank water gets filtered in 1 hour?).

Are these filters good? Does anyone have any experience with these? Maybe the 1200 is too strong and I should go with the 1000 model thats for tanks up to 100g @ 265gph. Mine will be a 55g.

I wanted to go with a sunsun, but maybe this filter would be just as good?

it should be ok. I have a cascade 500 that has sat in the closet for years cause I could never get it to work right. Never really liked it. I switched to fluval 304's and haven't had a problem.

the sunsun is from what I've been reading and hearing a great filter.

i run the catalina 1000's on my 29's(320 gph rated)
they all have angels in them...

Cool. Just dont know if the 1200 on a 55g would have too much current for the fish I am going to have, which will be tetras, an angel and BN

Honestly sometimes I think the current on mine is a little much. Grated my corys love it but sometimes I see my Angels and tetras fighting against it.

you can deflect current with structure in the tank.
on some of mine I removed the spray bar..virtually eliminating current
