I can get some smallish perch from a local lake and was thinking of starting a naturel type tank with a couple of these in it.

Has anyone had any experience of keeping perch?

WELCOME TO AC!!!

Native fish require a lot of room because they grow fast and put off a lot of waste. Depending upon the type of perch you want, you'll probably want to go with at least a 55 gallon tank if you want to keep more than one.... (for small breeds like pumpkinseed sunfish, etc. Big guys will need more than that.) I wouldn't suggest keeping more than two in a tank of that size, even. Keep in mind that these fish are used to a LOT of space, to the tune of hundreds of thousands of gallons in lakes.

I would try to get the fish as young as possible, that way you can watch them grow up....

Also, once you catch a wild fish and put it in an aquarium, NEVER EVER release it back into the wild. (I could go off on a rant right now, but I won't....:D)

Take a look at the NANFA website (I know the url is posted somewhere in the forums, I'll edit it in when I find it....), they have some good information about keeping native fish. Searching google for "native aquarium fish" might yield some good results, too.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

EDIT: Duh.... http://www.nanfa.org

Another site that could give you some ideas about general info and habits of native fish is Virginia Techs Virtual Aquarium
