since my 58 gallon is not going to be large enough for a dogface puffer are there any fish that will fit into my tank that are equal in personality to the dogface puffer?

You could do an Undulate Trigger kept by himself since they need a min of 55 gallons. You can keep a couple of Damsels but they will become meals eventually. Just beware they are very nasty and pretty aggressive but they do have personality. There are some other small wrasses and such that will work. Hope this helps.

If you have live rock in your tank and doing a reef, a great fish would be the lantern bass. These guys get about 4-5 inches and have loads of personality, and they are easy on the pocket book too. They will watch you and keep an eye on you at all times. They love to sit on mushrooms and you will catch them chasing amphipods in your tank all day. They are by far one of my favorite fish. The only sad part, one per tank.
